Failing to score against their League 1 opposition was symptomatic of their wider issue, having scored just 19 goals all season in the English top flight. And now, they are looking to do something about it.
New striker target emerging
Now, as per the generally reliable Luke Edwards of Telegraph Sport, a new striker target has emerged as the Magpies desperately search for a replacement for Callum Wilson before the end of January.
The target in question? Burnley’s Chris Wood.
The Lancashire outfit are in direct competition with Eddie Howe’s side to survive in the Premier League, so there are questions as to whether they would sanction any potential deal, but Edwards reports that:
“Newcastle United have turned their attention to Burnley striker Chris Wood in their search for a centre forward and hope he will sign this week”

He would certainly be an upgrade on Dwight Gayle, the current option up front, although he is far from the glamourous option that many on Tyneside would have envisioned following their wealthy new owners taking over the club, and links to the likes of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Alexander Isak having been made.
However, he would arrive a proven Premier League goalscorer, which is ultimately just what Newcastle need to beat the drop.
Newcastle fans, would you be happy?
